Even in the absence of federal standards, major casino operators in the United States are racing to embrace online gaming, as they gear up to attract internet gambling enthusiasts in a market expected to reach $10 billion a year by 2017. Some land based casinos are teaming with online game developers in an effort of converting the 25 to 35 year old to becoming participants in the online casino industry.

Last year, the US Justice Department declared that only online betting on sporting events is legal and based on that, experts say different states will unilaterally legalize some forms of online gambling, from lotteries to poker contests. Therefore, MGM has teamed with developer Playstudios to create a platform for online video slots, blackjack and other traditional gambling games. Facebook, the social network giant, recently introduced a gaming application in the UK that permits users to play with real money. Casino executives believe they can make money on this and they race to grab market share of the nascent online casino industry.

Online gaming regulations are not ready yet and big casino operators would prefer federal standards to regulate this industry as they would offer a larger, uniform market. On the other hand, state-by-state legislation could lead to a patchwork of regulations and different tax rates. But a federal solution is unlikely to be passed this year as Congress adjourned before it could consider a measure backed by US Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and US Senator Jon Kyl. In order to make it happen it would require quick action during the post-election congressional session.

States like Nevada are trying to boost revenues by legalizing online poker. IGT and Bally Technologies Inc, two slot machine makers, said in June they were granted online gaming licenses in Nevada. These licenses would allow them to partner with casinos in Nevada to provide online poker and other interactive games through their video slot machines. Despite the enthusiasm, not all casino officials are placing all their bets on the online arena. Las Vegas Sands Corporation’s representatives said the company is taking a more cautious stance because they believe the profitability will not be high.
