Online gambling in the US has made an important step forward after the announcement that New Jersey has finally regulated online casino gambling. On February 26, New Jersey’s Governor Chris Christie signed the amended online gambling bill into law. This step came after Christie has conditionally vetoed the bill only 19 days ago. The Governor wanted some modifications to the bill, including an increase of the tax rate from 10% to 15% of gross gaming revenue and a 10-year sunset period. After the amended bill passed the Assembly and the Senate, in less than an hour later, the bill was signed into law.

At the end of the regulation process, the Governor stated that the decision was critical as he insisted on including the proper regulatory framework and safeguards in the bill. Christie is confident that New Jersey is offering a responsible yet exciting option to gambling that will make Atlantic City more competitive and bring financial benefits to the state as a whole. Casinos in this state can now offer online gambling products in order to attract new gamblers through different freebies which would be earned from online play. This online gambling strategy wants to bring players in the land casinos to personally redeem these comps and possibly to spend more money there.

Although the law is now here, casino executives have stated that it could be six months to a year before online gambling gets functional. The law will not take effect until the state Division of Gaming Enforcement sets a start date. In order to benefit from online gambling, players would have to set up online accounts with a particular casino that can offer for real money online gambling any game available in their casino. Also, the gamblers will be required to appear in person at a casino to open their accounts and will be subject to the same per-hand limits as the land casino gamblers. The introduction of this law means New Jersey residents will now have access to a safe and regulated online gaming market and the state will have a new source for job creation and incomes.
