Recently the UK Gambling Commission and IBIS World released two new reports about online gambling in the United Kingdom. The first one, called the Gambling Prevalence Survey, was completed by ICM Research and covers overall gambling participation and remote gambling participation. The study is based on 4,000 adults surveyed and covers the year ended March 2012. According to the report, male players outnumbered female players and most of them were aged over 45. Also, the report stated that in 2009 55.2% of the people said they have participated in at least one form of gambling in the previous four weeks and now the figures have gone up to 58.1%.

48% of the respondents opted for the most popular gambling activity which are National Lottery tickets, followed by National Lottery scratch cards and good cause lotteries. Horse race betting and gambling at slot machines were 4.3% and 3.4%, according to the Gambling Prevalence Survey.

When it comes to remote gambling, only 12.2% of the adults surveyed said they had participated in at least one form of remote gambling in the previous four weeks. In 2011 the figure reached 12.4%. Online purchased tickets from the National Lottery figured prominently and the age group was lower at 18 to 44. Online gambling via a computer or laptop was most popular with 11% of all respondents’ answers. Remote gambling via mobile phone and interactive TV followed in second place.

The IBIS World study on the gambling industry in the United Kingdom shows that the industry has grown a lot compared to ten years ago but has registered a decline during the past five years. One of the main reasons for that was the indoor smoking ban, which led to a decline in revenue. Besides that, the government introduced budget cuts, online gambling operators moved offshore and the popularity of online casinos decreased in long-term. The report stated that persistent negative economic conditions have negated the positive effects of major sporting events and the upcoming London Olympic Games are unlikely to bring any cheer. The gambling industry is expected to grow over the next five years through 2017-18.
