New Jersey’s state governor, Chris Christie, will decide in the next few days if the proposed online gambling bill will be passed. The deadline is due to expire next week and the latest insider information is that the bill will not be rejected outright as it was done last time. Christie will probably exercise a conditional veto and the bill will be sent back to the legislature with the suggested changes. After the bill is suitably revised by the Senate and Assembly of New Jersey then the governor could sign it into law. According to sources, one of the suggestions that are likely to be made is that only online poker will be considered and online casino gambling is to be dropped.

The Governor has been keeping everyone guessing since he received the proposed online casino gambling law. An influential magazine publisher in Atlantic City said on a social network that his sources indicate that Governor Christie is considering a conditional veto of the online gambling bill. The information also says that one of the reasons why Christie is reacting like that is the fact that Democrats are blocking his other plans. If the information proves to be true, the Republican governor would use the online gambling bill as leverage for Democrat support on other issues.

2013 is an election year in New Jersey and the governor’s post along with 120 seats in the Senate and Assembly are up for grabs. This is probably another reason for such a course of action. Governor Christie does not want to generate conflicts in this period and a conditional veto is the middle of the path. The current conditions are working in Christie’s favor because amending the bill is not simple as it seems. Due to the fact that the annual budget season is due to start within the next few weeks and could extend until the elections, there would be little time to attend to the bill. If that happens, Christie can claim that he assisted both pro and anti online gambling lobbies. New Jersey and Delaware have the most all-embracing online gambling legalization bills in motion and next week the country will know where online gambling is headed.
