Two major online casino operators have recently announced they will be leaving two different European markets due to different reasons. One of the leading operators will exit the Greek market and the other one will be leaving the Dutch market.

The lack of clarity on the gambling regulation in Greece is the main reason why Betfair, a popular betting operator, will withdraw all its online casino operations in this market. The company’s legal advisors have suggested that the operator exit from the market after the unsuccessful action of seeking information from the Greek Government. The online casino operator was interested on the cost and conditions attached to the gambling licenses that the government planned to issue to operators.

Their conclusion says that the gambling legislation proposed by Greece was inconsistent with European law and the taxes proposed by the local government make the market economically unattractive. The decision on exiting the Greek market has proved to be wise as the Greek Gambling Commission announced earlier this month that firms operating in the country without a permit would face financial penalties and criminal sanctions. The total cost of this process for the company will be around £13 million in revenues in the current fiscal year. The online gambling operator also exited the German market after the introduction of a sports event stakes tax which came into force in July 2012.

A directive from the Netherlands Gambling Authority asking unlicensed online gambling operators to withdraw from the market has pushed bwin.party digital entertainment group to leave the Dutch market. According to market reports, the directive was issued to about forty online gambling operators active in the Dutch market and until now, twenty operators, including major companies, have complied. Analysts believe the Dutch authority’s directive has been issued in order to facilitate new online gambling regulation that is likely to be established in the near present. The group will also exit the Argentinean province of Misiones online gambling market. The company’s decision not to renew its license purely for commercial reasons was announced by the Director of Corporate Communications.
