The new online gambling law in the United Kingdom has moved one step ahead over the past few days. Recently, the Department of Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee met to examine oral and written evidence from a host of interested parties on the draft Gambling Bill. Several issues were discussed, the most important being the benefits that will accrue to consumers from the Bill and why the potential benefits of the Bill for consumers outweigh the disadvantages to legitimate operators. The committee also talked about how the proposed legislation would help to reduce match-fixing. If implemented, this draft legislation will see major changes in the way online gambling is administered in the country. The government’s main plan is to introduce secondary licensing for overseas operators and taxation at the point of consumption.

Leaders of the United Kingdom gambling industry, including the Remote Gambling Association, 888 Holdings, William Hill Online, Gala Coral Group, Betfair, The Rank Group, CARE, Paddy Power and Ladbrokes, wanted to record their views. For example, 888 Holdings listed the steps taken by the company to ensure responsible gaming. On the other hand, the Rank Group, which is primarily a land casino operator, said that the land casino industry would be hurt due to the lower rates of taxation on online gambling.

Statistics for the calendar year 2012 provided no surprises regarding online casino gambling in the UK. 55.3% of the 4,000 adults surveyed had participated in at least one form of gambling in the previous four weeks. When it comes to participating in remote gambling, 12% is the number, growing from 7% in 2006. Remote gambling includes online gambling via a computer, laptop or handheld device, gambling via mobile phone and interactive TV. The majority of those participating in remote gambling are men in the age group 18 to 44 years. The UK Gambling Commission also published the survey that asked respondents to comment on the fairness of gambling activity in the UK. The percentage of adults that believe gambling in Britain is conducted fairly and can be trusted is 48.5%. The figures are not a surprise, as this has been the case in the recent past.
