The Spanish online casino market has been liberated six months ago in June 2012 and since then, 30 online gambling operators were issued licenses. A recent report published by the internet publication El Pais.com shows some astounding figures regarding online gambling in Spain. The statistics released by the designated authority that oversees gambling in Spain says that just over one million players spent € 2.3 billion in the first six months of legalized online casino gambling. Prior to liberalization there were only 200,000 players wagering but after June 2012 the number of online gamblers has surged five-fold. The figures also show that the average Spanish punter spent about € 550 a year on online gambling.

Online poker was the main sector and generated the maximum revenue amounting to € 952 million. Sports betting was second with revenues of € 861 million, online casino gambling generated € 371 million and online bingo generated € 24 million. Other interesting information published in the report shows that 69% of online gamblers bought tickets online for the national lottery and 52% of punters have placed a bet on sports events. The statistics also say that 68% of typical online gamblers were males, most of whom were generally well-educated and aged between 25 and 44.

Tax authorities in Spain are also pleased with the result of regulating the local online casino market. The increase in online gambling activity will bring important benefits to Spain’s cash-strapped tax authorities. Tax revenues were estimated prior to legalization to about € 100 million for this year but now, revised estimates place the tax revenues at over € 140 million. The economic analysts in Spain believe that online gambling will grow at an annualized rate of 10%. In comparison with Spain, their neighbours from France have estimated their online gambling revenues at € 10.2 billion. Italy also has estimated its internet gambling revenues at € 9.8 billion. But the Spanish market has much greater potential for growth as online gambling presently constitutes only 17% of the overall gambling market in the country. Besides that, Spain has a plan of legalizing online slot machines sometime in 2013.
