The state of New Jersey legalized online poker earlier this year after failed attempts in previous years. Online casino gambling will kick off in the state in late November and many gambling enthusiasts are excited. The New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement announced that 37 firms have submitted applications to be involved with the new activity. This was only the first round of fillings and more applications are expected to be filled as the start of internet gaming moves closer. Also, names on the list won’t be disclosed until they are approved by regulators.

The new law stipulates that only companies that own a brick-and-mortar casino will be allowed to run the games. All of New Jersey’s 12 casinos will not use in-house software because developing in-house software is notoriously challenging and instead they will partner with existing internet gambling providers, such as PokerStars. The very popular brand, PokerStars, inked a deal with a casino just recently, because for an offshore-based Internet poker firm, buying a casino would be a very intense licensing process. Online casino gambling giant PokerStars had tried to buy a casino but the plan fell through due to licensing concerns.

Other major states in the US have also legalized online betting, including Nevada and Delaware, and California is expected to take the next step too. Nevada was the first state where online casino Ultimate Poker dealt the first regulated real-money hand of online poker in the United States history. According to press releases, only the 37 firms that applied by Monday’s deadline in New Jersey can expect to possibly offer games later this year. Despite that, online casino companies can always express interest at a later point in time. Other industry big names have expressed interest to either purchase a casino or build a brand new one in order to have the chance to operate Internet gambling from New Jersey. For example, Bwin.Party Digital Entertainment has partnered with the Borgota, 888 Holdings reached a partnership with Caesars Entertainment and Nevada-based Ultimate Gaming will do business with the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort. New Jersey could be the key to eventually offering games across the United States.
