Online casino gambling is becoming more and more popular among enthusiastic players from all over the world. UK residents have spent last year almost £2.3 billion on online gambling. These figures represent a growth of 80% since 2008 and analysts of the market predict the numbers will grow by 34% over the next four years. Recently, a report published in the UK revealed that online searches for gambling have slumped while smartphone gambling apps have surged in popularity. Published in Gaming Sector Report issue 11 by an agency based in London, the report focused on game-related searches during a 12-month period on Google.

In this study, the London-based digital marketing agency, found that search engine queries such as “sports betting”, “bingo”, “poker” and “casino” totaled 1.5 million in June. Despite these impressive numbers, the report also revealed that one month later, in July, the number of searches fell by a third to 995,830, the steepest drop ever recorded. The most popular term was “casino” which made up the majority of July’s queries with a 35% share. “Sports betting” with 31%, “bingo” with 18% and “poker” with 16% were also among the most important online gambling searches on Google. On the other hand, UK’s number one bookmaker William Hill boasts more than a million downloads of its app. Launched 18 months ago, the mobile app has benefited from sports betting on-the-go with 38% of sports bets placed on tablets or smartphones in the app’s first year.

The mobile gambling market in the UK is developing at an increasing pace as William Hill’s competitors, 888 group, bet365 and Paddy Power have also launched successful applications for smartphones. This way, online casino gambling is becoming more and more accessible to casino enthusiasts in all the corners of the world. Recently, the British government announced a 15% tax on off-shore operators as lawmakers in the UK want to ensure that remote gambling operators who have UK customers make a fair contribution to public finances. Analyst of the online casino industry estimated that the new rules will bring £300 million a year in additional tax revenue.
